D10T - Transmission Stand
In a fast paced environment such as Toromont REMAN, streamlining procedures, and simplifying problems through engineering solutions can result in major cost savings.
The D10T transmission is unique where the internals mechanisms are completely exposed since it mounts inside the body of the dozer with only a faceplate being exposed to elements. This cylindrical transmission is usually sent to facility either using the CAT stand (seen in the image) or wrapped on a pallet. The benefit of the stand is both protect the valuable product against damage from the environment and to collect oil that drips out during transportation since there is no housing to contain the oil.
On a particular occasion a request was brought to me to redesign the stand such that it could be manufactured the same day meaning the product could be shipped to the customer the following day, and it performed equivalent to the CAT designed stand.
Due to the manufacturing constraints of the facility, the stand had to be designed such that all sheet metal could be cut with a torch and the structure provided with square tubes.
After a few measurements, and reference to the SIS, and some dimensional checks the design seen in the PDF was created.
It is recognized the material cost for this stand is more than the CAT provided stand, however the footprint remains the same and the simplified design results in labour saving and reduced manufacturing time and requirements.
An unexpected result of this design is easier loading and unloading of the transmission due to the removal of the 45 degree loading angle.
